Jiu Jitsu Black Belt

Recently I was awarded a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu–a difficult journey.  I was recently asked by a client, Is Jiu Jitsu a “‘silver bullet?  What’s it like to be at the end of your goal?”

Jiu Jitsu has saved my life from many perspectives. And it’s not a silver bullet.  Jiu Jitsu is a journey from the finite to the infinite.  No matter how long I do Jiu Jitsu its humbling to feel like I know nothing at all, while continuing to build skill–even as my body wears out from the aging process.

To me Jiu Jitsu is a metaphor: the daily choice to continue to walk down the path despite challenges–learning to adapt to changing circumstances out of my control.

Lesotho Crew

I have such fond memories of my team in Lesotho, 2021.

They were probably the first Basotho ever trained as a group–tough as nails.

I have such fond memories of being able to share my skills with them.

Fighting the "Whipper Snappers"

It’s rough competing with people half your age.

But it keeps me young at heart.

World Masters 2019

Competition is very important because people fight to win.  My goal has been to win every major competition (Pan Ams and Worlds) at every belt level–Gi and No Gi.

Up to this point I’ve accomplished my goas, only winning at Black Belt remains–a very serious challenge.

Isabella Purple Belt

We’ve been doing Jiu Jitsu together for 11 years now.  She’s been given the nickname “crusher,” and “liability.”  I’m so very proud of her tenacity.
